Institute for Business Engineering and Technology Application
(Research Institute for Operations Management and Logistics)
BETA forms the largest research core in the Netherlands in the field of analysis, design, and management of operational processes within technology intensive organisations in industry, distribution, and the service sector. BETA develops scientific knowledge to solve problems in industry and transfers this knowledge. To this purpose BETA uses a modular, quantitive angle in which mathematical, logistical, information engineering, economic and socio-scientific knowledge is integrated and adapted to the specific characteristics of people in a technology intensive organisation.
The research within BETA centres on three research programmes: Unit Management, Chain Management and Network Management.

Institute for Programming Research and Algorithmics
IPA is a collaboration between eight universities: TU/e, the University of Utrecht, University of Twente, Free University of Amsterdam, Catholic University of Nijmegen, University of Maastricht, University of Groningen, University of Amsterdam and the Centre for Mathematics and Computing Sciences (CWI). The Danish research school BRICS, the Finnish research school TUCS and the British research school UKII collaborate with IPA under the name European Educational Forum (EEF). The field the IPA covers is divided into three research themes:
In conjunction with these main themes, six spearheads of research has been developed: Testing, Renovation, Embedded Systems, Software Architecture, Natural Computation and Algorithms for Planning and Design.

Engineering Mechanics
Engineering Mechanics focuses on the description, analysis, and optimisation of the static and dynamic behaviour of materials, products, and processes. EM is a joint initiative of the TU/e, Technical University of Delft (TUD), and the University of Twente (UT). The collaboration between the participating universities in the research school takes place through local institutes: the Stevin Centre for Computational and Experimental Engineering Science’ for the TU/e, the ‘Koiter Institute Delft’ for the TUD and the ‘Twente Institute of Mechanics’ for the UT. In turn each institute makes use of the contributions of the thirteen research groups within the larger institutions for Engineering Mechanics.
For the first five-year period between 1997 and 2001, the research of the research school Engineering Mechanics is focusing on four research themes:

Materials Analysis, Testing, Technology and Research
MATTeR stems from collaboration between TNO/TPD and the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry. It is concerned with research on materials that are neither polymer nor metal. Within the TU/e scientists from the departments of Mathematics and Computing Science, and Applied Physics participate next to scientists from the TVM and SKA group of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry.

COmmunication technology: Basic Research and Applications
The interuniversity research school COBRA researches the field of communication technology. The research is both fundamental and applied. Fundamental research is done on composite semiconductors, optical polymers, optically active glass, as well as metallic and magnetic films and multilayers, the surfaces of semiconductors, metals and oxides, and on electrons and phonons in low-dimensional semiconductor systems and other material systems. The fundamental research is the foundation for a broad range of applied research on new opto-electronic devices, electronic components for high-frequency applications, rapid switching elements, and components for storage and processing of information and information storage with optical, radio, or magnetic techniques.
COBRA is a collaboration between the TU/e, the Technical University of Delft, and the University of Twente. The TU/e is commissioner.
