Why apply for an ISBN number?
Each year TU/e staff members produce many publications. Most of these appear as journal articles. Often however they appear as separate publications, such as books, dissertations, conference proceedings or annual reports. It is recommended to have these separate publications officially registered and assigned an ISBN (International Standard Book Number).

By assigning ISBNs to publications, they will be more easily retrievable on both national and international levels. Publications with ISBNs are included in the Dutch National Bibliography, 'Brinkman's Cumulatieve Catalogus'. In many catalogues and bibliographies, ISBNs may be used as search keys.

What is ISBN?
The purpose of an International Standard Book Number (ISBN) is to make a publication traceable according to an international standard, ISO recommendation 2108. Each ISBN is a unique, thirteen digit number. It is divided into fields designating country of origin, publisher and title. The last digit is a check digit. ISBN is a unique identification for an officially registered publication. As ISBNs are included in automated databases, they have not only a bibliographic significance, but also play an important role in international ordering, and in stocktaking at libraries and bookstores.

The institution responsible for issuing ISBNs in The Netherlands is :

Netherlands Depository Library (Depot van Nederlandse publikaties)
The University Library's aim is to receive 3 printed copies of each publication, along with a digital file (Note: a different regulation applies for dissertations). Two copies are destined for the University Library's own collection. The third copy is sent to the Netherlands Depository Library, part of the Royal Library at The Hague. Here, all publications which appear in The Netherlands are collected. The copy received is used to draft the complete and final catalogue entry which is published in 'Brinkman's Cumulatieve Catalogus', the Dutch national bibliography, and entered into the Netherlands Central Catalogue.
