The TU/e Library Proxy Server

Janus, god of entrances and exits, doors and gates

To improve its service to staff members and students who wish to consult retrieval systems and full-text journals from outside the TU/e, the TU/e Library has introduced a Proxy Server .

In order to access the Library's retrieval systems, full-text journals etc, a TU/e IP address is required. Otherwise the user is not recognized as belonging to the TU/e and will have no access.

This problem can be solved by making a VPN connection, but this proves to be difficult in many cases. Making a VPN connection requires specific settings, and students and apprentices at work outside the TU/e often cannot make use of VPN as the firms where they are at work employ firewalls and do not permit them to install software.

However, access becomes easy by linking a user at an IP address outside the TU/e IP range (131.155.*.*) to the Proxy Server . You may log into the proxy server with your normal NT user name and password, and then pass through to the Library website. Only the occurence of 'janus.libr.tue.nl' in the url in the browser's address bar indicates that access is taking place via the proxy server. You may now access the retrieval systems and journals as you are accustomed.

Who may use the Proxy Server?

TU/e staff members and students only are authorized to access the Library's collection of full-text journals and retrieval systems. Also via the Proxy Server.

How to access via the Proxy Server

Go to the Proxy Server via this link. Log in with your normal NT user name and password. You will then return to the Library website and be able to access retrieval systems and full-text journals as you are accustomed. Only the occurence of 'janus.libr.tue.nl' in your browser's address bar indicates that access is taking place via the Proxy Server.

Does the Proxy Server require special settings?

Users from outside the TU/e network may follow the link to the Proxy Server, and access retrieval systems and full-text databases via this Proxy, without any special settings.

If you are connected via VPN, first shut down this connection before logging into the Proxy.

'The browser however must be set for using 'cookies'.

Can the Proxy Server be used inside TU/e network?

Access via the Proxy Server makes sense only if connection is made from outside the TU/e network.

If the link to the Proxy is followed by anyone inside the TU/e network, the Proxy will detect that the user is coming from inside the TU/e IP range and forward this user to the desired website, without further Proxy intercession.

Why do some links not work via the Proxy Server?

The url for a retrieval system or full-text journal may occasionally still have to be entered into the Proxy Server configuration. If you report the problem via this form we will try to solve it as soon as possible.

Has VPN connection now been superseded?

Access via the Proxy Server is limited to users whose IP addresses commence with 131.155. To access other TU/e servers -within the TU/e domain - from outside the TU/e, a VPN connection is required.
