Healthcare insurance

You must make sure you have adequate healthcare insurance during your stay in the Netherlands. Everyone residing in the Netherlands has this obligation. In this section you can find out which insurances are available to you, how the Dutch healthcare works and other useful information on healthcare insurances.

Flowchart
Click here for the flowchart which helps you to find out if you have to take out a Basiszorgverzekering.

Temporary or permanent resident
Whether you need to take out a Basiszorgverzekering or not sometimes depends on whether or not you are considered a permanent or temporary resident. In the flowchart above you can read about whether this applies to you.
If it applies to you, you could send the SVB (the organisation deciding whether you are considered a permanent or temporary resident for social security matters) with information about your situation.

In cooperation with the SVB we have drafted a form which you can use to provide the SVB with relevant information: Temporary or permanent resident

Health care

No one likes to get ill, especially in a foreign country, but it is a possibility you cannot rule out.

A family doctor (huisarts) is a General Practitioner. Through your family doctor you have access to all the services of the Dutch medical system. Once you have found housing, it is important find a family doctor. Make an appointment to take in your family medical records. Do not wait until an emergency occurs.

In Eindhoven there is a health care center in every part of the city. If you want to enlist in a health care center, you had best do so in the health care center closest to your house or room. On the website of the Eindhoven health care centers you can find a map of the city, with the health care center nearest to you. Click "English" in the top menu. More info online: An English brochure about the health care center can be downloaded.

You will also be asked to choose a dentist. Before coming to the Netherlands it is advisable to ask you dentist for your dental records and bring them along. This might also be necessary for insurance reasons.
