Wireless lan for visitors

ATTENTION:

The information below is intended for University employees only. If you are a guest of the university, and are unable to connect to EduRoam, please contact your host(ess). Your host(ess) will be able to forward your request for internet access.

The Visitors Wireless Network [VWN] service is designed for those visitors which would like to use the wireless network of the university but whose establishment does not participate in the EduRoam Authentication Infrastructure.

Notice that contrary to the EduRoam network which uses encryption the visitor’s network is unsecured.

To gain access to the VWN you will need a (temporary) visitor’s account.

You can ask for such an account at the following service desks:

  • The faculties service desks
  • The central ICT service desk
  • Library help desk
  • The Auditorium personnel service

To make a connection with the VWN you should follow the following steps:

  • Configure the VWN on your laptop or PDA [SmartPhone]
  • Make a connection with this VWN [if you have more than one wireless configuration you should select the one you have just configured in step 1 and connect to it.
  • Start your Internet browser which will put you automatically in the login screen for the VWN.
  • After logging in with your visitors account you should be able to make use of this network.

The VWN configuration parameters are:

  • Network name (SSID)     : guest
  • Network Authentication  : open (no authentication)
  • Data encryption         : Disabled

To make life somewhat easier we will give you the explicit configuration procedure for Windows XP right here:

  • Select start->Control Panel -> Network Connections
  • Click with the right mouse button on 'Wireless Network Connections'
  • Select Properties -> Wireless Networks

  • Mark ‘Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings’ and select ‘Add’

  • Use guest for 'Network name (SSID)', select Disabled for ‘Data encryption’ and push OK

  • The VWN appears now under ‘Preferred networks’; Click on ‘Advanced’

  • Select ‘Access Point (infrastructure) networks only' and click on ‘Close’ and ‘OK’

The configuration of the VWN is now completed and you can connect to it. Now you can start your Internet browser which will put you automatically in the login screen for the VWN.

Probably you will get a “Security Alert” popup concerning the Visitors portal certificate. To avoid this problem you should install the “Cybertrust Educational CA” from http://secure.globalsign.net/cacert/sureserverEDU.crt

After logging in with your visitors account you should be able to make use of this network.

You can mail all your questions and comments to guest-registration@remove-this.tue.nl
