'Rind' 1955 / 1967
Location: In the hall of the IPO building
Upon the 10th anniversary of the Institute for Perception Research (IPO) in 1967, there is occasion to purchase a work of art. At the suggestion of the then employee F. Leopold a work by M.C. Escher (1898-1972) is chosen. As he has no time to make a new work, Escher proposed that an existing work be carried out as a Gobelin tapestry.
The decision is made for the wood engraving 'Rind' from 1955, which is based on the portrait of Escher’s wife Jetta. Leopold chooses this, because the eye, the nose and the ear are visible, senses that make man a perceptive being. Escher also proposes to have the Gobelin woven by his famous friend Edmond the Cneudt (1905-1987), who lives in the same city. On previous occasions the latter has carried out such commissions to Escher’s full satisfaction.
