'Phoenix' 1997
Location: Helix, large lecture hall, ground floor
For this wall relief Arend Bulder (1941) started from the concepts of 'crystal' and 'crystallization'. They refer to organic growth processes, which only take place under certain conditions. Crystals from the same bath are never identical in their growth and shape, though. This is a given through which Bulder refers to the training of students.
For the relief Bulder, who attended the Art Academy in Arnhem and taught there until 1985, used wooden basic elements, a steel frame, acrylic paint and coltron. Coltron is a special non-woven synthetic fleece, which was developed by AKZO.
The relief was paid for by the Chemical Engineers Society and the Art Committee. It was donated to the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry upon the opening of the new building in 1997.
