'Rooster' 1972
Location: Chemical Engineering and Chemistry, stairwell, floor 3
Do we look differently at a work of art when its name is changed? Upon its installation (1967) the TH-Berichten called this sculpture 'Bird'. Later this became 'Hen', but it appears to be called 'Rooster'. Naturally, the work of art does not derive its value from the name, bur from the manner in which Slegers (1929) adds expressive value to it.
His works in bronze are usually capricious, asymmetrical stacks of forms that suggest dynamism. The work by Slegers, who has learned his craft in practice, always has abstract aspects and is sometimes abstract altogether. As is shown by the gigantic sculpture 'Expansion' standing in front of the Rabobank in Eindhoven. Nonetheless his sculptures always show a good balance and seem to want to get off the ground.
