'Birdman' 1985-1986
Location: The Hall, central library, floor 1.
Does the 'Birdman' (1985-1986) bless the students bent over books in the library and working on their future? Does he watch over the knowledge that is stored there and that, like a source of nectar, entices the studying bees? It is a sculpture that stands up straight magisterially and that induces one to reflection, even though it is silent and does not speak.
Van den Boomen (1944) attended night school at the Academy of Industrial Design, where he graduated in 1970. In 1986 he had an exhibition at the TU/e. Even then his works were more like constructions of all kinds of (found) materials, than sculptures in the classical sense. In this respect his affinity with Gerrit van Bakel, whom he knew well, is obvious.
