'Nereid on Triton' 1962

Location: Near the porter's lodge of E-Hoog, floor 1

For Nic Jonk (1928-1994) Greek mythology was an important source of inspiration. That is remarkable, for in the abstract trends in art of the 1950s and 1960s the classical style was not really accepted or recommended. His sculptures are organic, with round shapes and lots of volume.
That is true also for this 'Nereid on Triton'. Nereid, a sea-nymph in Greek mythology, is shown in an intimate embrace with Triton, the sea god represented as a dolphin here. Jonk must really have loved this theme, for he made many variants of this sculpture, in different sizes.
