Marius van Beek

'Tauromachy'

Location: Chemical Engineering, stairwell, floor 1

The sculptor and art critic Marius van Beek did not only make autonomous sculptures, but also monuments. He is best known for the liberation monument at the foot of the Waal bridge in Nijmegen. Van Beek sculpts both in bronze and in stone.

'Tauromachy' ('Bullfight') is a sculpture about battle, which is often a basic theme in his work. The origin of this lies in World War II, when he was a member of the resistance. Apart from the monuments and other sculptures, this fighting spirit came back in 1974: with the enormous work 'Goal of Santiago', which showed persons hanged from the crossbar of a football goal, he accused the dictatorship in Chile.
