'Turbulence' 1995
Location: Near the entrance to the Department of Physics
The physical phenomenon of turbulence captured in sheet steel, solidified movement in a rigid and motionless material. Margot Zanstra (1919) has a preference for mathematical shapes, but always with a strong rhythm and balance.
Most probably this is a property that she developed in her previous career. For many years Zanstra was a ballet dancer with the National Ballet, for which she also made choreographies. Only after her dismissal, in 1966, does she start to make her first sculptures.
'Turbulence' was manufactured in the workshop of the Department of Physics, in consultation with Zanstra. It is almost an exact copy of the sculpture that she made in 1987 for the Japanese Utsukushi-gahara Open Air Museum. She was invited by the organization for the fifth Henri Moore Grand Prize Exhibition and 'Turbulence' gains her a special mention. In 1991 she wins the Henry Moore prize itself with the sculpture 'Ghostdwelling'.
