Medals (2003)
Earlier Reniers has made the plaque van prof. Schouten in the IPO building; in 2003 he is commissioned by the university to design two medals. They are the TU/e medal, intended for special occasions, and the Holst medal, which is handed out at the annual Holst lecture.
Reniers gets acquainted with the phenomenon of medals during his night study at the Academy of Industrial Design, in the 1970s. He makes many of them, often commissions, varying from the Rabobank to museum Kempenland. What is remarkable is that he expands the traditional design –a coin with two worked sides – with other forms.
The medals made by Reniers often consist of several parts, connected with hinges, so that they can be stood erect. They contain all kinds of openings and viewing holes, corresponding with the pictures in an ingenious manner. As a result, his designs do not escape notice: in 1992 the Fédération the la Médaille awards him a prize for the best combination of word and image.
