'Horizontal and Vertical Chestnut' 1997
Auditorium (floor 2), entrance Potentiaal]
The sculptor Hendrik Oddens (1942) is commissioned frequently to make portraits and gravestones. Apart from this, he also creates a fascinating free oeuvre, using both stone, bronze, junk and wood to shape his sculptures.
Even at primary school he is given the nickname 'Michelangelo', because he makes heads in cement by means of a chisel. Later he attends the Academy of Visual Arts (1956-1960) and the National Academy in Amsterdam (1960-1962).
The TU/e has two sculptures for which the chestnut tree is the point of departure. Oddens wants to try and make personal impulses result in coherent and significant sculptures, whereby he allows reason, emotion and movement to merge.
