Hans Ittman

Wire sculpture 1958

Location: Against the wall of the pond near the entrance to the Paviljoen

Right from childhood Hans Ittman (1914 - 1972) used to draw and he keeps doing this even when studying law. To the dismay of the family of notaries from which he descends he breaks off this study in order to be an artist. On a grant from the French state he studies at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris from 1946 to 1949, and works in Zadkine’s studio.

Ittman uses a wide variety of styles and is one of the first artists in the Netherlands to make wire sculptures. The deformation of human shapes in particular appeals to him, as can be seen in this wire sculpture from 1958. Moreover, he is also a fervent advocate of the integration of visual art and architecture. This is also shown by the Wall sculpture (1961) and the colored metal shapes in the hall of the pavilion of the Industrial Engineering Department.
