Armand van der Helm

'Dying Warrior'

Location: Helix, stairwell, floor 2

Unfortunately the maker of this small sculpture never got the chance to allow his creative capacities to develop in full, as he died in 1969 at the early age of thirty. Armand van der Helm (1939) first studied at the Royal Academy in The Hague and made mostly sculptures in a classical style. His chief consideration in doing so was that the thought that people should be able to understand his sculptures. Often he would choose as his subject a woman or a horse, both of which he combined in this sculpture, 'Dying Warrior'.
