'Black Box' 1968
Realization: Wil van Kessel (Eindhoven)
Location: Vertigo (floor 7)
When is something a painting? Is this work by Coppelmans a painting, a sculpture, a construction? In the 1950s and 1960s Coppelmans (1925-1993) explores all the limits of the craft and uses many forms and materials. In addition to sculptures, paintings and façades (and combinations of these) he also makes sculptures of tar and boulders and designs children’s playgrounds.
The 'Black Box' (1968) calls for active management. The lower part has slidable elements, so that the picture can change all the time. In 1968 Coppelmans presents a lecture entitled: 'Is art also science and science art?' It is a question that will always remain topical.
