Ring of Möbius
Original design: Möbius
Realization: Ing. Hans Kalkhoven.
Location: Entrance TU/e grounds from Kennedylaan
The German mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Möbius is the designer of the famous sculpture. Characteristic is that it forms a two-dimensional surface with a twist, but that it has been made of one whole. The execution was in the hands of ing. Hans Kalkhoven, former head of the Works Department. The rock on which the Ring stands was selected specially in a German quarry, and the smaller stones are from Norway.
The Ring of Möbius, together with the rendering of the text 'Mens Agitat Molem' by Dom Hans van der Laan, was a gift from Philips upon the 30th anniversary in 1986. The theme of this lustrum, 'From the inside out' is depicted eminently by the 'Ring of Möbius'. It also replaces the 'Orbitrans', a comparable sculpture in plastic that was lost in the early 1980s.
